Prayer Babies

Prayer Babies

By Chana (Jenny) Weisberg

Childbearing proceeded like clockwork for us. I had three daughters in quick succession, with a space of exactly two years between each birth.

But Moriah, my fourth child, was different. After my third daughter was born, I became pregnant, and was scheduled once again to give birth on my third's daughter's second birthday. And then for the first time in my life, I miscarried.

The time between my miscarriage and the start of my pregnancy with Moriah were among the saddest months of my life. I grieved for that lost baby that I would never be a mother to, and each month that passed was accompanied by the same stabbing sense of loss that I experienced that terrible winter day when I actually miscarried.

During that time, my loss cast a shadow over every moment of my life, over my mornings spent writing, over my afternoons in the park catching my giggling daughters at the bottom of the slide, over my evenings spent returning phone calls and washing down the kitchen counters.

My loss cast a shadow over every moment of my life
I have never prayed in my life like I prayed during those months to get pregnant again.

The day that I found out I was pregnant with Moriah, I turned to G-d with thanks and sobbed with joy.

Every day of that pregnancy I asked to be blessed with a "healthy and whole baby," and I often visited the Western Wall with a prayer book and a full package of tissues. By the time I headed home, the package was nearly empty.

In the end, we named our fourth daughter Moriah, in honor of Mount Moriah where the Western Wall is located. We named her Moriah in honor of the yearning and tears and prayer that poured out of me at that holy place, and which filled the months leading up to Moriah's conception and her long-anticipated birth.

Moriah is a special baby for me. While I have always believed that the birth of every healthy child is a gift from G-d, the intensity of my prayers as I awaited Moriah transformed me into a person who feels the truth of this miracle in every ounce of my being. To this day, my awareness that this little girl is a gift from G-d pulsates through my connection with her.

The eight months following that miscarriage, though traumatic for me, were a blip compared with the suffering of one in seven married women who statistically could be afflicted at one point in their marriages with infertility. These are women who struggle treatment after treatment, year after year, and even decade after decade with a sense of longing that makes my own short-lived yearning seem insignificant by comparison. The difference between my yearning and theirs is the difference between a person who really needs to get outside for a breath of fresh air, and a suffocating person who gasps for oxygen.

Yet my experience, however short-lived, managed to open my eyes to these women who often suffer in silence.

Since that miscarriage, I have kept a list of childless women that I pray for, from my community and from all over the world. And every year, always to my amazement, I cross two or three childless-women-turned-mothers off my list.

When I meet these long-awaited babies, who fly into the world on the tail of thousands upon thousands of prayers, they have a special glow about them. These are children who are equal parts flesh, blood, tears, and longing. These are prayer babies.

These are babies like six-month-old Hodaya. Hodaya was born after five years of marriage, three years of fertility treatments, and a high-risk pregnancy that was spent largely in a hospital bed.

Or like Tehila, who was born two months premature and spent six weeks in an incubator. I prayed for this precious little girl every single day. Every new baby I see makes me smile. But when I met Tehila for the first time yesterday, sleeping in her baby carriage, she gave me goosebumps.

These are babies like eight-month-old Raphael. Five years ago, Raphael's mother gave birth to a sick baby girl who tragically died several hours after she was born. It took Raphael's mother two years to become pregnant again, and that pregnancy also ended tragically in a second-trimester miscarriage. A year later, Raphael was conceived.

These are children who are equal parts flesh, blood, tears, and longing
Usually, when I receive a mass email announcing a birth I forward it to my husband, and reply with a hasty email wishing "Mazal Tov!" When I received the email about Raphael, I wept. Then I called his mother, still woozy from the birth, on her cellphone to hear all about it.

To me, these children represent the ultimate picture of hope.

Every baby is a miracle, but the heartfelt prayers that went into every one of these prayer babies makes us see that they are miracles. Our prayers for them open up our eyes, and enable us to see these children for what they really are. For what all children are.

That is the gift of prayer.

On Rosh Hashanah we read the stories of three barren women, Sarah, Rachel, and Hanna. It is their stories of longing for their own prayer babies that should inspire us through this pivotal week leading up to Yom Kippur.

Why are infertile women such a central theme of the High Holidays? Because there are few people in the world who will ever pray with the intensity of a woman who yearns for a child.

These great women teach us how the power of prayer can transform a woman into a matriarch, and a child into a leader of the Jewish people. Prayer accomplishes this, in large part, by clarifying what is truly important.

You don't pray for your car, or for your manicure, or for your internet connection.

You pray for your children, that they should be good people who will do good things. That they should be the kind of Jews who throughout their lives will create a great light to illuminate the darkness.

Prayer babies are so precious because our prayers for them open our eyes to realize that these children were sent to us special delivery by the Master of the Universe.

During the days leading up to Yom Kippur and on the holiest day of the year itself, let us continue in the tradition of our matriarchs, and pray for our own children like we never have before. And let us pray for those who have yet to have their own children. And let us give strength to those who wonder if they ever will.

But most importantly, let us pray so that we will discover the prayer babies in our own homes, whether they are a month old, or four years old, or thirty-four years old. Whether they were conceived after a decade of fertility treatments, or by their parents' first anniversary.

Any baby can have the special glow of a prayer baby. All you need to do is open up your mouth and open up your heart.

'Shocking' package for lawyer

'Shocking' package for lawyer
A. Sangeetha

PENANG: A criminal lawyer had a rude shock when he received a bullet in a package sent by post to his office in the afternoon mail.

Lawyer R.S.N Rayer said he received the .38 calibre bullet packed in a fountain pen box sent via Pos Laju at 12.40pm on Thursday.

"I collected my mail from my clerk when I got  back to my office from court. When I was opening the package wrapped in a brown paper, I thought someone had sent me a gift.

"But I got a shock when I saw the bullet inside the blue box," he told newsmen at a press conference.

The package carried the sender's name as "Nagarajan s/o Soona Muthu", with the sender's address  as 126, Jalan Besar, off Jalan Sentul, Kuala Lumpur.

"I believe this is a bogus name and address," said Rayer, who was visibly shaken.

Rayer, who has been practicing for the past nine years, said he had no enemies but did not discount the possibility there may be angry next-of-kin of murdered victims who may hold a grudge against him for defending the alleged killers.

Bukit Gelugor MP Karpal Singh who accompanied Rayer to the Lebuh Pantai police station to lodge a report at 2.50pm said the fact that a bullet had been sent showed it was easily available.

"The police must investigate this case to ascertain who is behind it. This is a serious matter and anyone caught in possession of a bullet can be charged under Section 57 (1) (b) of the Internal Security Act which carries the death penalty," he said.

Israel has suspended contact with evangelist Pat Robertson for suggesting Prime Minister Ariel Sharo

JERUSALEM (AP) -- Israel has suspended contact with evangelist Pat Robertson for suggesting Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's stroke was divine punishment for withdrawing from the Gaza Strip.

The controversy has cast doubt on plans for a Christian tourism center that would showcase the growing flow of money and influence from U.S. church groups.

The decision, announced Wednesday by Israeli officials, does not affect other Christian groups that also consider it their spiritual duty to support Israel as fulfillment of biblical prophecy.

Israeli leaders see the Christian allies as tireless lobbyists in Washington and elsewhere. The evangelicals also funnel millions of dollars each year to Jewish settlers in the West Bank and -- before last year's pullout -- the Gaza Strip.

Tourism Minister Abraham Hirchson said he gave instructions to "stop all contact" with groups associated with Robertson. Last week, Robertson implied Sharon's massive stroke was a blow for "dividing God's land" with the withdrawal from Gaza and four West Bank settlements.

But Hirchson said the order did not apply to "all the evangelical community, God forbid."

Robertson is leading a group of evangelicals who have pledged to raise $50 million to build the Christian Heritage Center in Israel's northern Galilee region, where tradition says Jesus lived and taught. (Watch how Israel's decision curbs Robertson's plans -- 1:16)

Under a tentative agreement, Robertson's group was to put up the funding, while Israel would provide land and infrastructure. Hirchson had predicted it would draw up to 1 million pilgrims a year, generate $1.5 billion in spending and support about 40,000 jobs.

But the fate of the project is now in question, said Ido Hartuv, spokesman for the tourism ministry.

"We will not do business with him, only with other evangelicals who don't back these comments," Hartuv said. "We will do business with other evangelical leaders, friends of Israel, but not with him."

A spokeswoman for Robertson's ministry declined to comment on Israel's decision.

"We have not talked to the Israelis on this topic," said spokeswoman Angell Watts. "We continue to maintain our long-standing commitment to the Jewish people and the state of Israel."

Robertson's comments on Sharon drew condemnation from other Christian leaders and President Bush.

"God considers this land to be his," Robertson said on his TV program "The 700 Club." "You read the Bible and he says 'This is my land,' and for any prime minister of Israel who decides he is going to carve it up and give it away, God says, 'No, this is mine."'

The "Christian Zionist" movement began to take shape in the 19th century, but in recent decades it strengthened into a powerful force with deep pockets. Some estimates place the annual figure of evangelical aid to Israel at more than $25 million. The Gaza withdrawal has become a new and potent rallying point.

In October, a group of Gaza settlers received a standing ovation from more than 5,000 Christians at a conference in Jerusalem sponsored by the International Christian Embassy, a private agency that promotes Christian ties to Israel.

Robertson's Christian Heritage Center is planned for 35 acres of rolling Galilee hills near key Christian sites, including Capernaum, the Mount of the Beatitudes, where Jesus delivered the Sermon on the Mount, and Tabgha -- on the shores of the Sea of Galilee -- where Christians believe Jesus performed the miracle of the loaves and fish.

Israel was considering leasing the land to the Christians for free.

Hartuv left the door open for continuing the project, but only with people who don't back Robertson's statements.

"We want to see who in the group supports his (Robertson's) statements. Those who support the statements cannot do business with us. Those that publicly support Ariel Sharon's recovery ... are welcome to do business with us," Hartuv said.

China has no timetable for new IPOs

China has no timetable for new IPOs

BEIJING, Dec. 13 -- China has no time frame for resuming initial public offerings on its primary bourses, state media said on Tuesday, citing the country's top securities regulator.

"There is no timetable," Shang Fulin, chairman of the China Securities Regulatory Commission, was quoted as saying by major financial newspapers, when asked when IPOs would be resumed.

China has not seen a new IPO since May 24 when Sanhua Group Co. Ltd. , an air-conditioner component maker, sold its shares on the Shenzhen stock exchange.

The halt coincided with the launch of Beijing's second attempt to sell down some $250 billion in non-traded government shares in listed firms, to enhance transparency and boost corporate profitability.

A total of 339 listed firms have joined the state share reform programme as of Dec. 12, accounting for one-third of the market capitalization, Shang was quoted as saying.

Many expect the unofficial freeze to continue through the end of 2005, as regulators focus on getting rid of the stock overhang.

The state-owned shares are the legacy of a centrally planned economy, comprising two-thirds of the market capitalisation, and have weighed on bourses for years. Beijing first tried to unload them in 2001, but aborted the plan after markets dived 30 percent in three months.

China's key stock index has fallen over 12 percent so far this year, bogged down in part by the massive share sale.

Crude import growth to slow down

Crude import growth to slow down

BEIJING, Dec. 13 (Xinhuanet)-- Latest Customs statistics show China has imported 120 million tons crude oil in the first 11 months this year, with the yearly total expected to hit 130 million tons.

Though the 11-month import increased 4.4 percent year-on-year, China Customs said the growth rate of China's crude oil import in 2005 will be lower than the previous two years.

According to the Customs, China imported a total of 28.25 million tons oil products from the overseas market in the past 11 months, down 17.9 percent compared with the same period of last year.

In the period, China's imports of electromechanical products increased 14.8 percent to 313.9 billion US dollars, while the imports of chemical products hit 71 billion dollars.

A total of 145,000 vehicles were imported into China in the last 11 months, 9 percent less than the same period of last year, and the imports of steel in the period also dropped 12.1 percent to 24 million tons, said the Customs.

The Customs statistics also show China increased imports of coal, iron ore and soybean in the first 11 months.
